How to drive participation in your incentive program

An incentive or rewards program is only beneficial when people use it, and many businesses find inefficient programs end up costing more than they’re worth. A successful benefits program can lead to increased employee satisfaction and engagement, which is always valued in businesses.

Enrollment rates are a quick, effective and tangible way to measure how effective a company’s incentive program is. Poor enrollment may suggest your business needs to implement a new program or further develop the existing one to make it more appealing to employees and customers. Take a look at these steps to help drive participation in your program.

Clearly explain your program
Make your program transparent, with steps and goals clearly outlined to participants. People need to know exactly how to enroll, what advantages there are to enrolling and what the end goal is for the program. According to a Metlife paper called ‘Get Ahead of the Enrollment Curve’, more than half of participants agree that they need more help to understand how their program works and how the benefits meet their needs. If this is reflected in your workplace, it may result in a lack of participation in your program.

Find out what your audience wants
There is a significant disconnect between what employers think will be useful for employees and what those who participate in the program actually value, according to the Metlife paper. Take the time to quiz your employees or customers on what elements they would like to see in their incentive program, and what enrollment steps and information they require to participate.

Work towards a goal
Improving enrollment and communications around programs is important for many employers, but only 31 per cent of those accounted for in the Metlife paper had measurable goals for those activities. It’s well established that defined goals are essential when it comes to participation in programs, so make sure you measure how your program progresses.
